A REAL THING?

Detox culture has infiltrated our newsfeeds. Nowdays, we see everything from juice cleanses to cayenne pepper and lemon juice concoctions, and now salt water flushes. But what is the salt water flush exactly?

The salt water flush involves consuming a glass of warm water mixed with a few teaspoons of salt. There are many variations and purported health claims like colon cleansing and weight loss.  But is this really a viable detox plan?

In most healthy individuals, the body is constantly processing and flushing out waste products involuntarily. Attempting to detoxify by ingesting items in peculiar quantities is unnecessary especially if you do not have major chronic health conditions.

SALT WATER

Consuming a tall glass of warm water mixed with salt will produce a bowel movement. This is a result of the excess sodium entering your bowel and creating a laxative effect.

SALT WATER DETOX

Regular bowel movements mean a healthy digestive system, and the colon is a crucial component of the digestive tract. But regular fitness and a healthy diet can also keep your colon running smoothly.

Salt Water Flush

If you are desperate of a colon cleanse, get to the root of the problem before reaching for a tall glass of salt water. Are you staying hydrated, consuming enough fiber, and staying active? If yes, this is the time to loop in your medical team to investigate a possible larger issue.

You will lose water weight and increase bowel movement frequency, which is not a healthy way of losing weight. You may also experience symptoms like bloating and nausea.

A salt water flush may also lead you to weight loss, but this is essentially a laxative diet.

CONSUMING SALT WATER REGULARLY CAN ALSO BE HARMFUL

You can experience dehydration, diarrhea, electrolyte imbalance, nausea, sodium overload, stomach bloating, and vomiting. Excessive sodium intake can also contribute to life-threatening high blood pressure and heart problems.

Your individual wellness goals can be achieved and sustained through gradual lifestyle changes that incorporate regular consumption of healthy food and reasonable activity levels without the potential negative side effects of a salt water cleanse.
